The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), founded in New York, US in 1852, is a professional organization representing more than 140,000 civil engineers. With a mission to advance professional knowledge and improve the practice of civil engineering. ASCE is a focal point for the development and transfer of research results, and technical policy and managerial information.

The American Society of Civil Engineers International Student Group, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST is newly formed under the guidance of ASCE and ASCE Hong Kong Section in September, 2001. It is the first International Student Group being formed outside North America.
